Disneyland 1/2 Marathon Racing Recap

Distance: 21.9km Time: 2:59: Pace: 8’10 kCal: 2,841 Heart: 140/155 RPE: 3 Type: 1/2 Marathon for fun

Well the Disney ½ marathon and coast-to-coast challenge are over.

My goal was to run it in under 3 hours with character stops along the way. But silently I was thinking 2h45m. It didn’t quite happen that way.

Of course, it took well over an hour to run the first 5k, but that’s what you get when standing in line to get your picture taken with Daisy and Aladdin and Captain Hook and Thomas Train and … you get the picture. And of course there was the nature-related pit stop!

It would have been nice to just keep running around Disneyland and California Adventure a few more times, but it was time to head out onto the streets. Besides, with all the distractions I may have never finished!

At Mile 6 – the sun was making things hot, but not the 90°F plus temperature I was expecting.

At Mile 9 – I had so much fun running into the Angels Stadium and seeing the crowd, that I totally missed the mile marker.

At Mile 10 – I realized that it would all be over soon, as there were no more lines to get into! I must admit I was a little disappointed to hear that Chip and Dale were not going to be around this time. I was soooo much looking forward to getting another photo shoot with them to match the one taken in Orlando.

At Mile 12.5 it was time to head to the finish line. I still had lots of energy and decided to put on a great finishing show sprinting to the end (and of course bumping into those that suddenly stop right at the finish line!). Donald Duck was there to great me and give me a high five. But before I could get my hand out, I got sideswiped by 3 teens as they ‘jumped’ all over him. Poor Donald…

Total time 2h59m – HA!
Under 3 hours… Just like clockwork.
Of course it took another 3 hours to leave, since the battery was dead in my car. But alas, that’s a story for another time.

Thank you Disney.
We had a great time and those medals?
They sure look mighty nice!

One Week to go for Disney

Distance: 7.0km Time: 52:47: Pace: 7’32 kCal: 829 Heart: NA RPE: 3 Type: 45min easy

Wow. What a nice enjoyable run this morning.

After the last few weeks, I thought I was going to die. Today’s weather was in the mid 60’s when I started and 45 minutes later I STILL had a smile on my face.

The break in the weather has now given me hope that I can actually make it through next week’s Disney Challenge without dragging my tongue along the pavement.

Uhm… I think I should point out one small flaw in my running.

I don’t hydrate. So just maybe that was one of the reasons for the last two weeks of torture. I’m a minimist when it comes to running. I try to carry as little as possible. Even my Nano is too big sometimes! And a water bottle…? HA!

I know I’ve got to be more ‘responsible’ – and I do mean too…
Especially when I started dreaming about eating grapes with Cleopatra 1/2 way through last Saturday’s run.
I promise.

But for today, grapes never came into my thoughts.
Only the gorgeous sunrise breaking through the trees as I ran along the park path.

A New 5K PR – But Wrong Direction!

Distance: 5.2km Time: 39:06 Pace: 7’32 kCal: 2,195 Heart: 141/199 RPE: 4 Type: 5K Race

This month has been so hot and between earthquakes and heat waves, running has not been #1 on the list. It’s around this time that I start looking for fitness gyms to get on the treadmills.

Yes – I know most of my friends out there do this in the winter months when it’s -20° …

Oh how I would love a little cold weather right now.

But be that as it may, I’ve been trying to get out and run. The sad part is that my running pace has gotten so slow, that it’s embarrassing! As a matter of fact, I got a new PR – in the opposite direction!

I ran the OC Fair Run last weekend to post a time of 39 min. WHAAT!!
I can almost walk it in that time! What happened to 30 minutes!?!
But I figured it out while running on the beach a few days ago. My stride is 1/2 – 1/3 of what it used to be. Ooooh boy…

Day one – For the Disney 1/2 Marathon

Distance: 15.0km Time: 2:04 Pace: 9’45/6’30 kCal: 1412 Heart: N/A RPE: 2 Type: 4×10-15 min runs

Today was a perfect day to get out.

I was planning on just going for a nice long walk along the beach, but by the time I got there and started walking, I just couldn’t help myself. I just had to start running. The weather was perfect – 63°F, overcast, a slight breeze, and very few people at 7am.

I few weeks ago I did the 4-mile pier-to-pier with my in-laws. My father in-law is 75 and he’s been running every single day for over 50 years.

It’s amazing to see how he runs. Not too fast (thank goodness for me), but very smooth and fluid while I was struggling away sinking into the sand with every step. How does he do that! And then he only breathes through his noise, while I’m a locomotive!

Man – I need wings!

Well I did learn a few things running with him and decided to try them out on my own today. Rather than running on the boardwalk, I ran along the beach. It was low tide, so again… Perfect. My goal wasn’t to get in a technical run, not to run a fast pace, and not to get the distance or time in. The goal was to simply enjoy myself.

And you know what? It worked!

I was at total peace while keeping an easy training pace. I focused on my breathing and simply enjoyed the ocean breeze on my face.

It was great to get out and a great ‘Day One’ for my ‘official’ marathon training.
Now if I can just find a full marathon to do after the Disney 1/2…
Suggestions anyone?

The Orlando 1/2, Happy Anniversary, and more…

The sun is out, the days are getting longer, and the flowers & dagwoods are starting to bloom. And after a few months of long hours put in for work, it’s time to take back control of my life (on the running side at least!).

It’s true that there is no excuse for not getting out and being active. You have to make the time. For me, it’s been challenging. 16 hour works days, 6 days a week makes it very challenging. But the work is under control now and I’m looking ahead to see what the new year brings.

For now a little recap of the last few months.

Jan 7 – Walt Disney 1/2 Marathon
It wasn’t my best and my pace was slower than the Portland Marathon, but with over 20,000 people cattle-herding towards a single onramp for the highway… a fast pace is not something you can or want to do.

Then there are all the stops to take pictures with Mickey, Mini, Pirates, GI Joes, and every other Disney character that you could image; they all came to life along the route. Running down Main Street and through the castle was amazing – as well as running though Epcot. However, I was hoping we would run around the lake at the international pavilions, but it wasn’t meant to be.

The most want-to-forget part was waking up at 3, getting on the bus at 3:45, and geting into the race corral before 5am. It was soooo coooooold! Thank goodness my wife suggested we snitch the red blankets we got on the plane down and use them while waiting for the race to start!. It was so cold that she ran with hers for 8 miles before dropping it. And then she took off even faster to ran the whole thing non-stop (not bad for absolutely no training since Portland). Of course, I took the leisure route, stopping for pictures, and asking for an acorn or two. I realized after a few close calls tripping over so many feet that it’s not possible for a big guy like me to squeeze through the crowds.

It was a lot of fun and we’re looking forward to the Disneyland 1/2 coming up in September. That one’s much more closer to home, so there’re be not jet lag issues. No speed records on this one either, asI’m hoping to get some family shots in with Chip n Dale again!

Feb 5 – Happy Anniversary

It’s been one year since I started on this journey.

Was it worth it? Yes. Absolutely. I’ve met a whole new side to living and it’s given me a more positive outlook in life (though I’ve always been pretty positive).

Have I lost any weight? Well… Yes and no. I’m actually the same as before. And in downtimes from injury, I start gaining. But the key it to be consistent and to have a happy, healthy lifestyle. I’ve gotten the happy part down pretty good. Still working on the healthy (eating my vegetables) part!

Do I have any additional goals for this year? I’ve started cycling. I’m still looking for a place to swim (other than a cold ocean with sharks). A triathlon is in the works. A few halfs and another marathon at the end of the year as well. I’ll get those all posted at a later date.

But, my immediate goal is to get out there to start running regularly again and to get back into shape.

Mar 6 – 1000 Miles (Almost)
Last year I had set myself a small personal goal to run 1000 miles.

I came in at 908 (1461km), a little short ‘cuz of my knee injury. But the good news is that I broke to Level Black (5,000km) with Nike+ They even sent me a free new footpad to say congrates. Now that was cool!

I’m hoping to break the 1,000 mile limit this year though.
So, I’ll keep you posted.

The Jelly Bean Race

Just needed to add this in.

Last year I did Jess’s Jelly Been race.
Well it’s coming up again this year over Easter week (April 1-8). It’s a virtual race and free to enter.

It’s a great way to get out there with no pressure. So if you’re signing up, let me know. I’d love to hear how you do.

Off to the Happiest Place on Earth

All my bags are packed and I’m ready to go. But no taxi’s waiting at my door…  as I need to drive 4 hours to Las Vegas before taking an overnight flight to Orlando!

Last weekend was the start of the New Year and I had a relaxing time running a few easy 5k runs on the treadmill in Palm Desert. It was a great vacation with minimal drinking, not-so-minimal eating, and lots of different activities. I did a few laps in the pool, ran, walked, played a relaxing game of golf, and even played a few games of croquet. I must admit, I’ve been taking it easy since October.

So yeah, I’ve gained a few pounds since the Portland Marathon, but I’ve got a plan.

Disney’s almost here and shoes are important

Distance: 5.00km Time: 0:45 Pace: 9’08” kCal: 439 Heart: N/A RPE: 4 Type: 343-12

It’s been a fun week.
But not too much running-wise, unless you count running around shopping for Christmas presents.
I my tooth is still causing some trouble, but not as much as what’s been happening with my right foot.
It took me a few weeks and around 20 – 25 miles of running to discover that the last pair of shoes I got where causing me some problems.

In pseudo-medical terms, of I ended up over-extending the movement around my big toe and started getting some pain (the medial head of the flexor hallucis brevis). I then started to run a little different to alleviate that pain, ONLY to start putting stress on the upper part of my posterior tibial tendon and lower extensor digitorum longus. And man! What a conflict of body parts!

Back to the Dentist for Christmas

Distance: 16.01km Time: 2:12 Pace: 8’25” kCal: 1113 Heart: N/A RPE: 5 Type: 343-10

I was right. It rained for a few days but I did get out to do some runs. The sad part is that the all-too-famous tooth pain has come back when I run.

I did go see the Dentist, and after much probing and searching, it’s simply my sinuses pushing onto the nerves of one of my teeth.

The result is a root canal and $$$. But it’s not going to happen before Christmas.

Presents and a Wedding Anniversary have priority.

So, I just have to watch myself and not go too crazy.
Maybe my teeth just want to let me know when I’m over training – no? Read the rest of this entry »

My Magic Mile

Distance: 10.12km Time: 1:30 Pace: 8’58” kCal: 921 Heart: 127/162 RPE: 5 Type: Magic Mile Test

This last weekend was my first time back to running.
My health is almost back to normal and the only thing left is to go see the dentist to fix up one of my teeth so as to avoid the bumping pain when I run (a filling fell out – rats!).

So, with only a few weeks left before the Disney Half Marathon, I’m looking for a way to fit my runs into a smart schedule. And for that, I’ve decided to use a part of Jeff Galloway’s training method which means I needed to figure out my Magic Mile.

Yesterday I did all the warm ups, glides, and jogging before seeing how well I could do coming off my chest cold. I was right where I thought I’d be: a 10 minute mile. So, I guess I’m looking at a 2h30m time for the moment. We’ll see how things go over the course of my last few weeks of training, but wouldn’t you know it… the weather for this coming week (all week) is RAIN!

Just when I’m ready and itchy to get going again.
Man, when it rains, it pours… get it !?!

Well, let’s see if I can sneak in some treadmill time.

A reflection on my journey

It’s been a weeks since I wrote my marathon Racing Recap.
And now I’m looking forward to the Disney World ½ Marathon coming up in January. I promised the doctor that I’ll take it easy, so I’ll stick with the ½ for now. It seems so short after doing Portland, but I think that the best part of doing a marathon is not the marathon itself, but the training.

After all…

  • It takes dedication to find the time to train.
  • It take determination not to over-train, and get injured.
  • It takes endurance to go the distance.
  • And, it takes stamina to go through the whole process.

With all the months involved and the journey to get to the point of doing a marathon, the marathon is really just a milestone like all the others (my first 30 minute run, my first 5k, then the first 5 miler, 10k, 10 miler…).

And now? Well…
I really enjoy the days when I get out in the morning for a great run or a long easy recovery walk.

So to reflect back on what I’ve accomplished, it’s really hard to believe that, less than a year ago, I was a non-runner with a crazy idea in his head to do his first marathon.

Some said I couldn’t do it. Some said I was crazy. Others where worried that I’d drop over and die. But most of my life-long friends and family saw a spark of youth inside me that is always there. Not the one that comes out when my wife keeps telling me to grow up… but the one, where I do things that make me feel alive.

Thinking back on how I got to this point? Well… it’s the people around me. My friends, family, twitterlings, and bloggerlites. Each of them (you) have helped me to get this far. So thank you to each of you!

But before I finish, I want to say a bit about my friend Rose.
She’s always been in the back of my mind (of course Facebook helps!).

She asked me a loooooong time ago if I’d like to join her in Kobe’s 1st marathon (and her first as well). Though I couldn’t make it to Japan, I thought about her during my training and during the marathon. So when I look back at everything that’s happened, I think… knowing someone else personally that was in the same boat as me, instilled more confidence in my getting to Portland.

As a matter of fact, just a few days ago (Nov 20) she did hers.
And she did good!

Who knows, may be I’ll join her next year – ‘cuz that finisher medal looks a mightly nice!

Well… I’m off to start my next training schedule for the Disney ½.
We will see where another full marathon fits in for 2012.
For now, I’m off north for US Thanksgiving around Monterey Bay & to run a few Turkey Trots.
