Disney’s almost here and shoes are important

It’s been a fun week.
But not too much running-wise, unless you count running around shopping for Christmas presents.
I my tooth is still causing some trouble, but not as much as what’s been happening with my right foot.
It took me a few weeks and around 20 – 25 miles of running to discover that the last pair of shoes I got where causing me some problems.

In pseudo-medical terms, of I ended up over-extending the movement around my big toe and started getting some pain (the medial head of the flexor hallucis brevis). I then started to run a little different to alleviate that pain, ONLY to start putting stress on the upper part of my posterior tibial tendon and lower extensor digitorum longus. And man! What a conflict of body parts!

This result was a not-to-famous 5 mile run wanna-be ending up as a 5km where only the first 1/3 was running. After that, I decided to stop running for a few days and figure out what was going on. I started walking/running barefoot to ‘remember’ my running style only to find out that the pain would not be there. I switched to my marathon shoes and things were still doing good and now things are starting to feeling better.

So this weekend I’ll be out in the desert, where I plan to do some running on the treadmill and desert trails. I might even sneak in some snowshoeing up in the mountains overlooking Palm Springs, but it doesn’t look like there’s much snow.

After that it’s just one week before the Disney ½ marathon.
I’m still pretty excited, especially after going back to the website and reading all the reviews from last year’s event. Yeah, they did have a record low of 30°F with freezing rain, but that’s not going to stop me.

It’s gonna be fun and…
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERY ONE!

  1. YupYup, I did the same, altered my stride to compensate for one pain only to get a new one. At least you have the smarts to know it though! Good luck at Disney!
